At some point, whenever you can manage those 209 minutes, it's worth seeing. Oh, and from everything I've heard, it's DEFINITELY worth watching the 209 minute Director's Cut over the 149 minute Theatrical Release. The Director's Cut has much more character development and tension, whereas the Theatrical Release (from what I've heard) is essentially just the action sequences mashed together with less connective thread.

Like I've complained about many times, I get annoyed at long films. I was not annoyed in the slightest with Das Boot.siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751168318018401735.post-15532764302932587152013-07-26T09:20:13.303-04:002013-07-26T09:20:13.303-04:00Well, I bailed on even attempting this one before ...Well, I bailed on even attempting this one before the Blog Club deadline. I knew it only by reputation for being long and serious and one of those movies only ridiculously hardcore cinephiles have ever actually seen. But having read your review I'm now much more inclined to somehow carve out the 209 minutes to appreciate it for myself. Thanks!

- Sunny DDale Glaserhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13720028364651179526noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751168318018401735.post-60369051774492041932013-07-22T11:10:36.098-04:002013-07-22T11:10:36.098-04:00There are way too many car movies for me to pick a...There are way too many car movies for me to pick a best. Best bus movie would be Speed (1994). Best Ship movie would have way too many again. Best sub movie is this one.

Other kinds - Best train movie might be The General; best plane movie would be Airplane; best truck movie - Duel comes to mind but it has a massive suspension of disbelief required for it that was too much for me to swallow - just take a different damn road.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751168318018401735.post-1168741631055027952013-07-21T20:48:05.612-04:002013-07-21T20:48:05.612-04:00Submarine category would be good. And yes, it does not feel at all like it is well over three hours!siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751168318018401735.post-38717672799420718682013-07-21T20:42:22.116-04:002013-07-21T20:42:22.116-04:00I hate you.I hate you.siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751168318018401735.post-63453285794827205382013-07-21T20:41:55.992-04:002013-07-21T20:41:55.992-04:00"Chip because I remember he strongly recommen..."Chip because I remember he strongly recommended this one to me... he was right... again!"

Was there ever any doubt? :-) In all seriousness, I do remember writing you the email of recommendations from among the 1980-present movies you had not seen and singling this one out as a must see. I'm glad you liked it. I think I also did that with The Lives of Others.

I haven't picked my next category of movies. I've had a submarine category brainstormed for a while now (triggered from a quote from Risky Business I like, of all things.) Maybe I should go with that and review Das Boot in time to get it into the Blog Club.

Actually, I was a good guess for this one because I would have recommended it, but so far I have never had that range of movies to pick from yet. I always seem to be assigned ranges from the earlier years to pick from. I had the recent Throne of Blood selection, so it will be a couple months before I get a choice coming up again.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751168318018401735.post-898330461985030922013-07-21T20:35:33.010-04:002013-07-21T20:35:33.010-04:00I keep a spreadsheet of everything I have watched ...I keep a spreadsheet of everything I have watched for The List and everything I still need to watch. By my count, there are 130 films that hit 2 1/2 hours or longer. That's the bad news. The good news is that some of them are really, really good and don't feel at all like their length. Yeah, there are some really over-long films in there, but not all of them are trials. I'd much rather sit through the nearly-4-hours of Lawrence of Arabia than the 70 minutes of Vinyl.

As for Das Boot, yeah, hell of a great film. It's not one I'd choose to watch often because of how claustrophobic it makes me, but the time goes by really fast. The genius of it is that it makes us root for World War II-era Germans. You can't help it. Most of these guys seem like such normal, even decent people.

I'm just gonna say it--next pick I get, I'm taking either Satantango or Jeanne Dielmann just to piss y'all off.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751168318018401735.post-15538747718099543202013-07-21T18:56:36.423-04:002013-07-21T18:56:36.423-04:00Confession: I watched Jeanne Dielman on fast forwa...Confession: I watched Jeanne Dielman on fast forward. Because that's the only way I was going to make it through that thing.

Ugh, I WILL watch Satantango this summer, I WILL watch Satantango this summer... I need to get that dang thing crossed off, and I am NOT looking forward to it!

I like that idea of keeping a list of those longer films...siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751168318018401735.post-71134335550898479742013-07-21T17:55:15.057-04:002013-07-21T17:55:15.057-04:00That actually had a closing HTML tag with "ji...That actually had a closing HTML tag with "jimcarrey" in it (a Liar Liar reference), but apparently Blogspot automatically filters HTML regardless of whether it's real or not. Oh well. :D

That's exactly how I feel when it comes to long movies; as long as it's warranted or justified, I usually don't have a problem. This is why I took such a personal affront to Satantango, since it is long solely because the director wanted it to be, and for no other discernable reason. Jeanne Dielman is another example; though I can understand the purpose of having that one be so long, I picked up on why it needed to be about 20 minutes in, and so the next 3 hours of the film were nothing but torture.

I've actually got a Notepad file of all the films I have left over 2 1/2 hours, that I'll probably (reluctantly) tackle after I'm done with the hard-to-find Compendium stuff. I'll probably need some prayers to get through that run.Adolytsihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12266038228108057617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751168318018401735.post-80459179162595195592013-07-21T17:17:03.493-04:002013-07-21T17:17:03.493-04:00I picture you running around in a circle waving li...I picture you running around in a circle waving little flags shouting "IT WAS MEEEEEEEEEE!" in a high-pitched voice, like a happy little kid. :)

In all seriousness, I had a suspicion it was one of the small little clique of bloggers with whom I am familiar who picked it. I didn't think it was Steve (because he copped to picking "Fight Club") but I was thinking maybe you or Chip (Chip because I remember he strongly recommended this one to me... he was right... again!).

Regardless, like I said above, THANKS, because I've really been meaning to sit my ass down and finally watch this film, and then it just went and obliterated my expectations.

I'm honestly glad someone else out there isn't too keen on overly long films. It's not that I object to lengthy movies, but I feel like if your movie is over two hours long, it better have a damn good reason to be. With Titanic, the reason it's so long is James Cameron's fucking ego, and that's not a good reason. With Das Boot, the massive running time never felt... unnecessary. It felt like the story needed it there, to really put you on that submarine, to really get you into these men's heads. It had a good reason. It wins!!!!!

Spellbinding and magic are great words to use for Das Boot.siochembiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11487373396181856763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4751168318018401735.post-65244257377631430222013-07-21T16:38:34.826-04:002013-07-21T16:38:34.826-04:00IT WAS MEEEEEEEE!
This was my pick for the club,...IT WAS MEEEEEEEE!

This was my pick for the club, and after your Titanic review, I was highly curious how you'd take to any exceedingly long picture, so I'm very glad you liked it as much as I did. I'm like you; anything over 2 1/2 hours and I'm rocking in my chair, but with this, you're just hooked the whole way through. It was spellbinding, and that sense of magic is what I hope for in any film I watch, though I've learned, going through the harder-to-find ones from the list, not to expect it out of every picture I see. I definitely wasn't expecting it out of such a long film like this one, but I'm damn grateful, that's for sure.Adolytsihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12266038228108057617noreply@blogger.com
